In the Name of Science

In the name of science,

in honor of the new vocabulary word "dissolve"
and inspired by the song Hard Rock Candy
We are making Hard Rock Candy!

Butter has looked through the magnifying glass at the sugar crystals

of the natural sugar we are using for our experiment.

Prior to the experiment we readied our materials:

A large jar

a string, weighted at the bottom with a paper clip.

A craft stick to hold it in place on top of the jar.

natural sugar

We boiled 2 cups of water

slowly added 4 cups of sugar,

adding one cup at a time until dissolved;

bring to a full boil.

The hot solution was poured into the jar.

the string was suspended into the jar

a piece of wax paper covered the top

and now we wait for the syrup to evaporate,

leaving the sugar crystals behind!

Day 1

This is after just 24 hours.

Look above the paper clip.

A sugar crystal has begun to form.
